University of Hawaii Seed Lab fails to supply papaya seed

04/05/2012

The Fiji Papaya industry was founded on the Hawaiian variety Solo Sunrise, and Fiji has a long standing relationship with the University of Hawaii Seed Lab which supplies the foundation seed. As demand for Solo Sunrise in Hawaii has dwindled over the years because of its susceptibility to PRSV, the supply and quality of seed from UH has declined significantly. As of February 2012, the UH has informed its customers that Solo Sunrise seed are no longer available and there is no clear indication of when it will be available again. This eventuality was anticipated by the FPP and the Project is continuing its certified seed producers scheme to help ensure, there is a consistent supply of quality seeds for the industry.
